A Client Access License (CAL) gives a user or device the right to access a Windows Server. The server license alone is not enough for most businesses.
01User CAL vs Device CAL
- User CAL — covers a person regardless of which device they use. Best when staff move between PCs.
- Device CAL — covers a machine regardless of who uses it. Best for shared workstations.
02RDS CALs
Remote Desktop Services (RDS) requires a special RDS CAL per user or device connecting over Remote Desktop. It’s sold separately from regular CALs.
03Do you need CALs?
- Windows Server Standard/Datacenter: yes, for each user or device.
- Windows Server Essentials: no — CALs are included.
- External (internet) access: usually needs special licensing — ask us.
