Upgrading to a new PC? Whether your license moves with you depends on the license type you own.
01Windows
- Retail keys can be transferred. Deactivate the old PC (Sign out /
slmgr /upk), then enter the key on the new machine via Settings > System > Activation. - OEM keys are locked to the original motherboard and cannot be transferred.
- Digital licenses linked to your Microsoft account can be reactivated with the Activation Troubleshooter — choose “I changed hardware recently”.
02Office
Perpetual Office licenses tied to a Microsoft account travel with the account. Sign in on the new PC at setup.office.com and reinstall. If the license is tied to the old device only, you may need to contact Microsoft or use our replacement-key support.
03Before you start
- Back up your files and note your keys.
- Remove the license from the old PC if the license allows transfer.
- Contact our support if activation fails after the move.
