Keeping Windows Secure: 10 Best Practices

1. 1Keep updates on. Automatic updates patch the attacks attackers use most.
2. 2Activate Windows genuinely. Unactivated systems may miss updates entirely.
3. 3Enable BitLocker (Pro editions) to protect data if the device is lost.
4. 4Use Windows Hello — face/PIN beats passwords for local login.
5. 5Turn on ransomware protection in Windows Security > Virus & threat protection.
6. 6Set up backups to OneDrive or an external drive.
7. 7Keep your Microsoft account with a strong, unique password and 2FA.
8. 8Beware of “free” software from unofficial sites — it’s the #1 malware vector.
9. 9Review startup apps and remove what you don’t use.
10. 10Run regular scans with the built-in Defender — it’s genuinely good.
